Websites We've Used in Class
Here are some websites we have used this year in our learning!
November 15, 2019 - Today we talked about planting trees (because some kids were talking about #teamtrees) and here's CBC Kids article on burning in the Amazon.

Mystery Science has videos based on inquiry questions students send to the organization. We watched one video by them on November 12 on Ostrich Eggs as a starting point for writing good estimations. Here is the video.
FakeOut - an online game by Civix, the nonpartisan charity that organizes the Student Votes across the country to coincide with national and provincial elections, including the National Student Vote 2019 in which our class participated. Civix creates learning opportunities for students to learn about and practice their rights and responsibilities as Canadian citizens. The FakeOut game is about learning how to critically read social media posts for information, how to determine what is true and what is 'fake news' and how to verify if something is true.
New Brunswick Public Library Books by Mail program - get books delivered straight to your house for FREE! Because we live far away from the nearest provincial library branch (St. Andrew's Ross Memorial Library, St. Stephen's St. Croix Library, Saint John's East, West and Main Branch libraries), the New Brunswick Public Library Service will MAIL you books. You need to sign up for the service, but then you can request books sent to you and you send them back by mail too!
If you do want to go to a physical library, many of the local libraries are interconnected through the Library Service. Below is a map of all the NBPLS branches. If you take a book out at one library, you can return it at any of the library branches around the province!

St. George also has a town library, which is not (yet ...) connected to the NPLS. More information to follow.
Interesting Online Reading |
|
Reading doesn't just need to be books or magazines. The New Brunswick curriculum evaluates both Reading and Viewing as part of the English Language Arts curriculum. Here are some websites that might get your child interested in learning something new.
Canada's History Society has an interesting website with videos, articles and activities for both children and adults. Here are some videos about World War One that give more information about some the battles I mentioned in class when talking about my work as a guide at Vimy Ridge, as part of our Remembrance Day commemoration. Please parents preview the videos ahead of time. I have not previewed all of the videos and they may not all be suitable for our age range.
